Illuminated script version of Portia's soliloquy from Shakespeare's 'The Merchant of Venice,' Act IV, Scene I. Text is gilt, with blue capitals and red filigree. Decorative boards are white half-leather with peach cloth and stamped gilt titles. Floral motif with Portia's face against a gilt background. Frontispiece is Portia in her lawyer's robes, against a gilt background. Minor nicks to gilt of frontispiece, and small area of color loss to Portia's face on front board. Interior lightly foxed. A pretty example of Victorian-era sentimentality.
